Here in Colorado, many organizations think the HMO model in Minnesota is the panacea to our state's rising health care costs and underperfoming outcomes. In MN, they know different. Managed care can only get you so far. One reason is that these HMOs tend to function like good-old-boy networks, (but instead of boys, its MDs only) and squash innovation that undermines MD dominance. So full acceptance of Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) in their care model continues to face stiff opposition. Dr. Steven Calvin is challenging the status quo in a BIG way. (see the link below)
In addition to spending many hours with Dr. Calvin and his team on the phone and at recent AABC conferences, we also hosted one of his nurses (Jessica) in MMC for a couple days to see in-person how we run our clinic, the birth rooms and our education program. Why? because with so many policy makers here in CO (and elsewhere) looking to MN for answers, it's great to see Dr. Calvin's dreams for a birth center become a reality.
