Natural Childbirth Preparation for MMC Families

4-week series, $230

This class is a requirement of new, first-time parents at MMC (hospital families, please scroll down for a childbirth series geared specifically to you). Participants will learn and discuss a variety of topics including: how to ease late pregnancy discomforts, optimal fetal positioning in both pregnancy and labor, the progress of labor and navigating the “what-ifs” of birth. This class will also spend time reviewing a variety of various relaxation and comfort measures including the importance of breath in labor and positioning. Content will also review what birth at MMC can look like in addition to discussing the importance of the partner at the birth, what they can expect and how to best support a laboring partner through a variety of techniques. We recommend starting the class between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy (to complete by 36 weeks).

When we ask MMC parents-to-be to take a childbirth preparation class, this class gets our highest recommendation. The class was created by Heather Scott, a certified childbirth instructor and doula for over seven years in the community and she is currently a nurse at MMC. All classes are taught by either Heather or Melissa Force, experienced certified childbirth instructors.

Birth at MMC Class

This class is recommended but not required for families whose last birth has been over a year at MMC. This will be a time to review the progression of labor, what birth at MMC is like; what is normal birth for MMC and what falls outside of normal and how it is supported. This is also a time for couples to practice comfort measures and coping techniques for labor. Content is also directed at partners regarding how to support mom during the early labor phase at home, what to look for while laboring at home, and when to be calling the midwives. We ask you to take it before 36 weeks of pregnancy. A recent participant said, “We really found this refresher class to be useful information. We came in feeling like it was just a requirement but came away with new information and questions answered that we didn’t even know we had! Thanks!”

*3 couples must be registered in order for the class to meet. Please arrange childcare for your current child(ren).

Natural Birth Control with FAM while Breastfeeding with Justina Thompson, FAE, RHE
2 hours, 1 workbook, $50 per person or $60 per couple, All Welcome Here, Including Babe-in-Arms.
It’s a myth that a woman can’t get pregnant while breastfeeding–one can! Options for birth control while breastfeeding are limited and things like the low dose Pill and IUD contain synthetic hormones. The Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) can be used as effective & natural birth control while breastfeeding. FAM is based on the observation and charting of scientifically proven fertility signs (cervical fluid, basal body temperature, and cervical position) that determine whether or not a woman is fertile (capable of getting pregnant) on any given day. Partners are encouraged to attend. See Class Agenda and REGISTER HERE
